WATER:
The water is excellent, pristine, with a PH value of slightly above 7 making
it slightly alkaline, this is the reason for fish being so plentiful. Our boat
slip is always full of fish. Because the Pool sits on limestone we are blessed
with good fishing. There is a water pressure system, and piping is all copper.
We had a septic system which we replaced with a large Sunmar unit which is environmentally
friendly.
SWIMMING:
Our six children all learned how to swim from when they were able to walk. There
is a high diving, shallow diving and a wading pool all within 50feet.
NEIGHBOURS:
Friendly but private, that’s why we’re on an island. There are about
12 families on the island. We just sold four lots, two to a local Glocester
Pool resident, one to a gentleman from Colorado, and the other to a gentleman
from England.
HOUSE CONSTRUCTION:
The house is solidly built with ¾” T & G fir plywood floor.
Roof deck is 1 by 8,10, and 12” pine. The walls are 1x6 T&G spruce
applied diagonally so the cottage can be raised. A project I began because I
could see the advantage of two stories. The building is completely insulated
with full thick batts and 5/8” wood fiber boards a la Johns-Manville,
where I worked for 35 yrs. The roofs are a couple of years old but perfect.
The porches are free floating, not attached to house, so it can easily be raised.
All new vinyl siding on cottage, shed, and boat house. Cottage foundations were
just recently checked and firmed up. Insulated for year round use. Access by
boat.
HEATING:
Is a wood/and coal sealed stove, can’t think of the type, but more than
adequate to heat the place. We once had a 14x8foot fieldstone fireplace surrounding
a heatilator which I tore down in preparation for lifting the house. When the
family heard of this project at 85 yrs they killed my dream. Probably a good
thing, since I had too many projects on my plate. The foundation for the fireplace
was preserved as well as the stone. For 3 or 4 thousand it could be replaced.
I have a picture.
BOATHOUSE:
The Joists are B.C. fir 2x12’s, there is a steel rod that can be moved
to accommodate a chain block, there are
4, should heavy lifting be necessary. When we had a cruiser for the kids to
ski behind this chain block facilitated engine maintenance. There are two huge
telescopic jacks should it be necessary to jack the boathouse to replace whatever.
There is an electric door. NB---wherever you may buy on the system remember
this, you can no longer build a free standing boathouse like ours. You must
blast into the rock on your property. Why? For fish life. We are fortunate to
have a boathouse located to just miss the prevailing winds and therefore there
are no problems with ice damage. In all our years we never had an ice problem.
Unfortunately our neighbors are not so lucky since their docks are exposed.
We had a longer dock for longer boats and we will replace it with a new one.
The chief engineer of Outboard Marine used to tie up his 35 ft Chris Craft almost
every weekend during the summer.
EFFLUENT:
There is no solid effluent because of the type of system. There is however white
water (sinks and shower) and gray water from the laundry which is all pumped
into the bush. Our environment we cherish and look after it.
